Talent jumps off

On September 11, an impressive collection of jumping foals will be auctioned. The selection committee considers itself fortunate to have foals from the best European mare lines. A very current selection has been made on the sport, but descendants of top progenitors such as Cornet Obolensky, Comme Il Faut, Diamant de Semilly, Emerald and Kannan also adorn the list.

Fred van Straaten: “We are looking for horses that go for it, fight for you. The moment a foal enters the orbit and it is enterprising, it moves electrically and when you see that it does not stick to the mother but goes its own way, then you know; we must have it.” After the photo-video days on July 16 and 17, we will place the selection online as soon as possible.

Foal Auction Prinsjesdag comes with an exclusive auction at CSI Ommen

Foal Auction Prinsjesdag and the Schuttert family have joined forces for the upcoming edition of CSI Ommen. On Saturday 4 August, ten very interesting jumping foals will be auctioned during the evening program. An excellent opportunity to capture the future between two international jumping classes.

The idea of auctioning foals at the renowned competition in Ommen arose about a year and a half ago, but at the time it was too short a day to set everything up. Because both parties agree, if you do something you have to do it right. That is why the first auction will take place in 2018. “We have known the Schuttert family for many years as a loyal buyer at our auction, and we have already discussed a collaboration like this. In Germany, it happens more and more often that a select group of foals are auctioned at international competitions, and we are very confident that this initiative will bring success," says Arjan van der Waaij as chairman of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag.

Own character
The four-star competition at the Driehoekhoeve in Stegeren – Ommen attracts many visitors every year, and Saturday evenings invariably have a wonderful program. An auction between the ranking test and the Medium Tour final contributes to this on all fronts. “On the one hand, the auction at CSI Ommen is a nice preview of our auctions in Ermelo on September 11 and 12, on the other hand it will be an auction with its own character and audience. There are many riders and sports people at the competition, and the foals can be seen in the stable all day and during the presentation in the afternoon,” explains Van der Waaij. The exact collection will be announced two to three weeks prior to the auction. “This will mainly concern older foals. We have already selected a number of foals and can become part of this collection after our photo and video days. In addition, there is still room for a few new foals for this auction, as we are almost ready for our regular auctions.”

Start and end product together
Hendrik-Jan Schuttert also has high expectations of the auction during the international competition. “It has every potential to become a success. Foal Auction Prinsjesdag guarantees quality and service, and we want to offer that with this auction. Most foals grow into sport horses, so what could be better than bringing the initial product and the end product together in this way at an international competition”, says the rider and trader enthusiastically. “As a family, we have had success buying foals ourselves many times, so it is an initiative that I fully support. Buying a foal is a long road, but often the best way to get your hands on quality horses. The selectors of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag have also proven for many years that they have captured the top of the crop for their auction, so we are looking forward to the collection and the auction.”

More information about this exclusive Prinsjesdag auction and the collection will soon be available at www.prinsjesdag.eu and www.jumpingdedriehoek.nl.

Governor son Kayne KWPN approved!

In September 2015, Gerard Korbeld and Adelinde Cornelissen came to Foal Auction Prinsjesdag with one goal, and that was to purchase the promising colt Kayne. This son of Korbeld's stallion Governor (by Totilas) already showed great potential as a foal, and in the end the duo came out on top for € 38,000 in the exciting bidding duel. Their trust was amply rewarded last week, because the eye-catcher bred by Lineke Bennink has been approved by the KWPN! With a 9 for the walk and five times an 8 for other parts, he came out at 81.5 points. A great future awaits him for both sport and breeding, and he has ended up in the right hands at Foal Auction Prinsjesdag.

Promising foals registered for the auction

Every year the selection committees of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag are faced with an enormous challenge. Putting together an excellent dressage and jumping foal collection, preferably using the superlative. More than half of the foals in both breeding directions have already been definitively registered and the collections seem to be meeting sky-high expectations.

The foals will be auctioned at Foal Auction Prinsjesdag on 11 and 12 September. For the dressage foal auction, Bert Poppelaars is one of the selection members who does everything in their power to register the best foals for the auction. “We are about halfway through our collection and we are incredibly enthusiastic about the foals that we have been able to select. The contribution of the scouts is also striking, because in this way we were able to attract new breeders with interesting foals," says Bert Poppelaars. “In addition, over the years we have built up a very loyal network of breeders, and we have been able to select striking foals from a lot of them. In terms of selection, we can say that it is even easier than last year to register the best foals for our auction. The good results and reputation of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag also play a role in this.”

Peaks at the auction

In addition to selecting top foals, the selection committee also takes on an advisory role when desired, with a view to preparing for the auction. “Because no matter how good your foal is, a dressage foal has to convince on the spot on auction day, otherwise it won't work. The breeders are well prepared when the foal is presented in optimal condition and we try to guide them in that. Because it is a win-win situation when a foal shows what it has to offer on auction day.”

Superior sports genes

The selection committee is also bursting with enthusiasm in the jumping direction. “It seems really good. We are half way through and we have established quality foals with excellent bloodlines. Overall, I think it's even better than last year," says selection committee member Fred van Straaten. “We don't have to make many concessions in terms of origin and the quality of the foals on offer shows that the breeders have already selected well themselves. We can fish from a very interesting pond and we have a group of loyal breeders who keep their best foals for auction. That is a great starting position!” A first look at the pedigrees of the selected foals makes it clear that breeding responds well to what the big sport demands. “We have selected foals from very strong sport lineages, with a lot of sport in the first three generations. In addition, they descend from interesting stallions that now stand out in the sport themselves or as progenitors, such as Halifax van het Kluizebos, Quabri de L'Isle, Emerald van 't Ruytershof and Nixon van 't Meulenhof.”

International reputation

It is also striking that several foals from foreign entrants have already been selected so far. “For example, from breeders from Italy and Saudi Arabia. They mostly operate their breeding in Europe and we are pleased to note that Foal Auction Prinsjesdag is the first choice for them”, says Fred van Straaten.

Anemone Horse Trucks shares the passion with Foal Auction Prinsjesdag

Over the years, Foal Auction Prinsjesdag has not only built up a large network of buyers and entrants, the auction has also entered into a fruitful alliance with a select group of business partners. One of the partners from the very beginning is Anemone Horse Trucks. This company uses exactly the same standard and quality and passion are paramount.

The company of Bert and Stefan van Kooten has been supplying horse trucks to quality-conscious customers at home and abroad since 1996. The Anemone Horse Trucks have become a household name and the company guarantees quality and service of the highest level. “We are aiming for exactly the same as Foal Auction Prinsjesdag. And we also do everything we can to optimally satisfy every customer," explains Bert van Kooten.

First Prince's Day partner

Since the auction moved from Middenbeemster to Ermelo, Anemone Horse Trucks is represented every year with trucks, a stand and delegation. “In the early years we were involved in the auction to provide extra decoration, and this was expanded further later. It started with putting up a few cars and plants, and now we are represented on all fronts at Foal Auction Prinsjesdag. We want to contribute to the 'wow feeling' that you want to give people at the auction, and we are the first partner involved in this auction.” It is a collaboration that goes like two hands on one stomach. “Valveiling Prinsjesdag and Anemone Horse Trucks have many similarities, and everything is done from passion and the pursuit of the highest attainable. That's what really sets the auction apart in my opinion. No concessions are made, there is real selection on performance and the organization does everything it can to satisfy every customer. That is a very strong formula, which is rewarded with great auction results. As a partner, we like to associate our name with such an auction, and September 11 and 12 are already circled in red in our agenda. Because in addition to a high-quality auction, it is also a lot of fun there,” laughs Van Kooten.

Foal Auction Prinsjesdag uses young scouts to put together collections

With the bar at the top, it is a challenge every year to put together high-quality dressage and jumping collections. As of this year, Foal Auction Prinsjesdag will therefore not only deploy professional selection committees, but also young breeding interests to play an active role in this as scouts. In this way the first top foals have already been registered.

Rejuvenation is one of the reasons for the organization to use scouts. “Young people have the future” says Prinsjesdag board member Peter Bleeker with a laugh. “We are all getting older and want to involve young people in the organisation. This is a great way for them to grow with the auction.” The scouts keep a close eye on their network. “Information goes through the internet at lightning speed, our scouts have an enormous network on social media and will use it to discover the best foals.”

stake out lines

From this year on, some familiar and new faces will be collaborating to put together the foal collections of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag. One of them is scout Koos Poppelaars, who has been very actively involved in the auction for several years. “Partly because of my father Bert, who is part of the selection committee for dressage foals, I am closely involved in Foal Auction Prinsjesdag and the selection. As a scout I mainly keep an eye on social media and I approach breeders from my own network when they have an interesting dressage foal. It is a matter of drawing many lines, having a clear idea of what kind of foals are good enough for our auction and being lucky enough that breeders want to auction their best foals at Prinsjesdag”, says Koos.

High gun factor

The success of an auction stands or falls with the foals offered. “The results and reputation of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag ensure that most breeders are happy to have their foals auctioned here. We all strive to put together an even stronger collection of foals every year, and in that regard we have made a convincing start this year. The first foals have been definitively registered, including three that I tipped. The auction topper could already be among them, because the level is very high. It is a win-win situation for everyone when the best foals come under our hammer and I am happy to be a part of that.”

Pedigree and presentation

Also Fred Jr. van Straaten, Wouter Bon, Peter and Jasper van der Waaij, and Steffi Verhagen are involved as scouts in Foal Auction Prinsjesdag. The latter sees many foals every day and views them through the eyes of a Prinsjesdag selection committee member. “Through a discussion with the selection committees, we as scouts are well informed about what kind of foals meet the requirements for Foal Auction Prinsjesdag. The selection committee has set the bar high, and so do I.”

On the website From now on, the foals can be registered online for one of the selection days for Foal Auction Prinsjesdag, the first of which is scheduled for Saturday 5 May. The selection criteria for Prinsjesdag foals are strict. The selection committee pays attention to correctness, quality, long lines and flexibility. In addition, the foal must have sport in terms of pedigree and must be commercially attractive. In the case of jumping foals in particular, the mother, grandmother and great-grandmother must have performed well in the sport themselves or have offspring that perform remarkably in the sport.

First selection day on Saturday 5 May

In the months of May, June and July, Foal Auction Prinsjesdag organizes eleven selection days on which the selection committees visit various addresses in the country to select the best foals for the 26e edition of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag. Foals with the best bloodlines and great potential for dressage or show jumping. Foals that can make a difference now and in the future.

Selection committee speaking

As the selection committee, Bert Poppelaars and Fred van Straaten Sr. are clear about the Prinsjesdag selection criteria. Bert: “When selecting our foals, we pay attention to correctness, quality, long lines and suppleness. In addition, the foal must have sport in terms of pedigree and must be commercially attractive.” Fred van Straaten adds: “We look at the mother. What has he done in sports? We have a rule that the mother, grandmother and great-grandmother must have performed themselves in the sport or have offspring that perform remarkably in the sport. That is an indication of a horse's disposition and character. We are looking for horses that go for it, fight for you. The moment a foal enters the orbit and it is enterprising, it moves electrically and when you see that it does not stick to the mother but goes its own way, then you know; we must have it.” Bert: “We make no concessions in terms of quality. Both the mare and the foal must have super quality.”

The first selection day will be held on Saturday 5 May, during which foals will be selected at the Waaij Stud in Eemnes, Stal Wezenberg in IJsselmuiden and Team Nijhof in Geesteren. In addition, the committee also visits breeders' homes. The first foals for the auctions on September 11 and 12 have already been confirmed. More news about this soon.  On this page you can register your foal(s) online, and find all selection dates and further information.

Successful international GP debut for Boston STH

In the short time that Denise Nekeman and the Boston STH (by Johnson), sold through Foal Auction Prinsjesdag, performed at Grand Prix level, they have already achieved high-profile successes. That started with a beautiful bronze medal at the KNHS Indoor Championships, followed by the victory and a personal best of more than 73% at the competition in Wezep. The international Grand Prix debut also resulted in a great success. At the three-star competition in Aachen, Denise drove her black wonder of movement, bred by Jan Temmink from Vorden, to fourth place in the Grand Prix thanks to a score of over 69%. This made them the best Dutch duo, and the next day in the freestyle they went even further. A good score of over 74% put them in third place. That tastes like more!

Air King stands out in Hengstleistungsprüfung

In the last sports test this spring in Münster-Handorf, the four-year-old Air Jordan son Air King turned out to be one of the outliers. This stallion, bred by Hendrika Florijn, was part of the collection of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag in 2014 and has continued to develop positively ever since. Which is no surprise given his strong pedigree, as he is closely related to international show jumpers such as Delphi (s.Zurich), Always Me (s.Larino) and Viscount (s.Burggraaf). At Foal Auction Prinsjesdag, Air King was purchased by the German stallion owner Henrik Klatte, who has had several successes with him and has great expectations of him. As a 2.5-year-old, the stallion already earned approval from Oldenburg-International and last year he completed his 14-day test with an 8.45 for the jumping components. Under the saddle, Air King once again convinced, and he came out with an average of 8.16.
