The Power of Performance also means that we apply strict criteria when compiling the annual foal collection. Our selectors only select foals from strong mare lines. From stallions that excel in international sport or have proven to inherit an above-average sport aptitude. But even more importantly, from dam lines in which sports performances in direct line are very strongly anchored.
Selection committee jumping
In Biest-Houtakker in North Brabant, about ten kilometers southeast of Tilburg, there is plenty of activity every day at Stal van Hoof. Horse owners from home and abroad know the way here to purchase new talent or to train their horses.
“When they asked me to participate in the selection committee of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag, I didn't hesitate for a moment. It is a great opportunity to see the offspring of many stallions. I also find it interesting that we go to many different places and can learn from fellow breeders.”
Selection committee jumping
Bob Janssens is a breeder, trader and show jumper at 1.40m level. He rode for Eric Laenen for 15 years. He rode the 4-, 5- and 6-year-old stallions here, such as the stallion El Barone 111 Z who is now competing at 1.60m level by Malin Baryard Johnsson. Bob breeds between 20 and 25 foals every year.
“When selecting, I pay particular attention to the dam lines and the models of the foals. In my opinion, the dam lines must be special, because strains that produce a lot of sport provide a higher chance that the foal will also perform well in sport later on. Beautiful models are important for driving comfort and of course also for presentation.”
Selection Committee Dressage
With over thirty years of experience as a stallion owner and breeder, Lauw van Vliet is closely involved in breeding. His company Stal Van Vliet in IJsselstein, Utrecht, focuses on both dressage and jumping stallions, and the trade in young and sport horses is also an important industry.
“I was approached by chairman Arjan van der Waaij, who asked if it could be something for me. Every year I see a lot of foals and just like Foal Auction Prinsjesdag I am convinced that it is only about the very best. Then it doesn't matter to me who the breeder is, or from which stallion the foal descends. The bar is set high and I like that!”
Selection Committee Dressage
The Van der Oord family has had a strong relationship with Foal Auction Prinsjesdag from the start. Cas van der Oord represents a new generation and hopes to attract new people to the auction.
“My father was already involved in setting up the auction. When board members Co Out and Gerard Koks approached me for a place on the dressage selection committee, I carefully considered this. Of course I'm still young, so it's quite a leap of faith, but that also makes it a very nice opportunity. In this time you have to be extra on top of it. Also through social media.”
